Petworth House.
"Petworth Park is the great art-treasury of
Sussex, and must on no account be neglected by the tourist.
The glorious scenery of the grounds, and the unequalled interest
of its picture-gallery, render it a shrine worthy of any pilgrim's
devotion.
The Park, which is about 14 miles in circumference is very beautiful. From the Prospect Tower
on the higher ground a noble view may be enjoyed. All around stretch exquisite turfy lawns, and shadowy
dells, and bold abrupt knolls, crowned by magnificent oaks, and
clumps of beech, and ash, and elm rear their dark green crests at
every " place of vantage.""
